How To Make Tortillas for Cinco de Mayo - 2013-04-30 09:01:01-04
I wanted to share one of our favorite projects – making tortillas for Cinco de Mayo. I love Mexican food, so cooking is the perfect activity for this holiday.
Recently, I posted a new enchilada recipe, Avocado Chicken Enchiladas and have a few more to share. I even have a diet enchilada recipe…really! I hope you won’t mind if I post several recipes this week.
It’s Cinco de Mayo – time to learn how to make tortillas.

Let me share how you can do it at home. Then, you can see Hunter’s Spanish class making tortillas. Of course, Hunter’s tortillas were great because my friend, Abigail, guided them along. Abigail is a pro, making tortillas for 25 years.
You’ll need to buy some Maseca. If you can get your hands on a tortilla press, that will help. Abigail got one for me when she was in Mexico one year. If you don’t have a tortilla press, use a rolling pin.
So simple…add water to the mix (1 cup Maseca to 2/3 cup water & 1/8 tsp salt)
I followed Abigail’s example and mixed it together with my hands. You dough should be the consistency of soft play doh. Mine was a little dry, so I added water (1 tablespoon at a time)
Cut wax paper in a circle, the same size as your tortilla press. Roll your dough into a ball and place on tortilla press.
Press firmly on your tortilla press. Your tortilla should be thin.
Open the tortilla press and peel the wax paper away from the tortilla. Now you are ready to cook on a skillet. You can see Abigail cooking below.

Yummy…warm corn (homemade) tortillas. I have a little dough left, so I’m heading downstairs to make a few more tortillas for dinner tonight. I’ll heat up some beans and rice to make a meal.
