    Reformation Day {Activities for Kids} - 2016-10-01 07:01:04-04

Reformation Day is at the end of this month, so why not have a Reformation Party. We hosted a Night of Reformation (or Day of Reformation) several years when our kids were younger.

Before I go any further, you might be wondering what is Reformation Day …

Reformation Day is the day that Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses on the church door. It was October 31st, 1517 and one of the turning-points in the history of the world. When Martin Luther nailed those 95 discussion points to the door of the Wittenburg Church, the Protestant Reformation was born.

Get 10 FUN activities to do with your kids to celebrate Reformation Day ... from HowToHomeschoolMyChild.com

Since this is a turning point in church history, regardless of your personal beliefs, why not make it a hands-on learning activity for your kids.  Here are 10 Hands-On Reformation Day Activities.

1. Sing & learn A Mighty Fortress, written by Martin Luther. Included in Reformation Day Activity Guide & Printables. Use this hymn for copywork over the next few weeks. Discuss what each verse means to your family.

2. Trace the route of William Tyndale as he was on the run and translating the Bible into English at the same time. Discuss how you would feel if you were in Tyndale’s position.

3. Art Appreciation: Use one of my favorite children’s art series, Art of Children by Raboff. Read & discuss (Albrecht) Durer: Art for Children Series by Ernest Raboff.
My favorite art for children series - Durer is awesome artist Beautiful images & easy to understand art discussion questions included. All you have to do is open the book & read.  You can still get a copy of this “out of print” gem at Amazon here.Great telling of Durer's story & art of the ReformationYour older elementary / middle school kids can read Artist of the Reformation, Albrecht Durer, by Joyce McPherson.

4. Act out Martin Luther posting his 95 Theses on the Wittenburg Church door. If you need a script, try  the one in  A Night of Reformation.

5. Calligraphy  your favorite Bible verse. Spend a week learning how to write in calligraphy.  I loved writing calligraphy as a teen and am thankful I know how to do it.

6. Listen to The Mystery of History, Volume III.
Mystery of History, Volume 3 - Check out our history curriculum that brings history to life! www.HowToHomeschoolMyChild.com
Author, Linda Hobar, reads her book that spans “The Renaissance, Reformation & Growth of Nations”. You’ll the Christian perspective of history.

7. Science: Read Along Came Galileo I just finished reading this children’s story of Galileo before we visit his museum in Florence, Italy. The story is easy for kids to understand. As you read the book, let your kids make a model of the solar system showing that the planets revolve around the sun.
Astronomy for Kids - balloons
You might try making this balloon solar system.

8. Watch a movie about one of the reformers. Here are a few.
Fabulous movie about Martin Luther - Yep, it's older, but I recommend it over the newer version...from HowToHomeschoolMyChild.comMartin Luther: I like the older version because it doesn’t paint either Martin Luther or the Catholic church as either a saint or a villain. You can see the corruption that all churches can sink to if they become self centered and self reliant.
William Tyndale is a fascinating character. This DVD tells his story & is worth watching as a family

God’s Outlaw: The Story of William Tyndale was a family favorite when our kids were here at home.
John Hus will inspire you to stand for Christ despite your circumstances. from HowToHomeschoolMyChild.com

John Hus is another reformer that will inspire you as you see him stand for Christ, despite his circumstances.
